Final example condemning Bid’ah (innovation) pg 11

The Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon Him) said:
((Whoever innovates or accommodates an innovator then upon him is the curse of Allaah, His Angels and the whole of mankind)) .Al-Bukhaaree (12/41) and Muslim (9/140)

Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee (rahimahullaah), said,
"That a servant meets Allaah with every sin except Shirk is better than meeting Him upon any of the innovated beliefs."
Reported by al-Baihaqee in al-I'tiqaad (p.158)
Sunna means “The path that is trodden”

(tarîq al-maslûk ), which entails holding fast to whatever the Prophet(peace be upon Him)and his rightly-guided successors held of doctrines, deeds, and sayings. This is the perfect and complete Sunna. That is why the Salaaf of old refrained from applying the name of Sunna to anything that fell short of this.
Definition of Bid'ah...
Imaam ash-Shaatibee mentions:

((Linguistically Bid’ah (innovation) means 'a newly invented matter'.

The Sharee'ah definition of bid'ah is:
"A newly invented way [beliefs or action] in the religion, in imitation of the Sharee'ah

(Prescribed Law),
By which nearness to Allaah is sought, [but] not being supported by any authentic proof,

Neither in its foundations, nor in the manner in which it is performed)).
Al-I’tisaam of ash-Shaatibee (1/37)
By Abuyaqoob
The Meaning of Sunna
It wouldn’t be correct to speak about Bid’ah and not to speak about it’s opposite (Sunna); because things are understood by there opposites. For example we would never understand darkness until we saw the light of day, and the feeling of extreme hot weather except after experiencing extreme cold. The examples continue so then let us begin.
Sunna means “the path that is trodden”
(tarîq al-maslûk ), which entails holding fast to whatever the Prophet(peace be upon Him)and his rightly-guided successors held of doctrines, deeds, and sayings. This is the perfect and complete Sunna. That is why the Salaaf of old refrained from applying the name of Sunna to anything that fell short of this."
For us to understand this and many of the aspects of the Deen of Islam then they must be understood firstly by these two ways. They must be first understood by the Language and the Sharia; to be able to try to gain correct understanding of our Deen Inshallah.
The Arabic word Sunna
Linguistically means "road" or "practice."
In the language of the Sharia
It denotes the whole [lawful] practice followed in the Religion, particularly the path of Prophets, whether pertaining to belief, religious and social practice, or ethics.

Sunna has three meanings.
In hadith terminology it denotes any
1Sayings (qawl),
2Actions (fi'l),
3Approvals (taqrîr),
Or attribute (sifa),
Whether physical (khilqiyya) or moral (khuluqiyya) ascribed to (udîfa ila) the Prophet (peace be upon Him), whether before or after the beginning of his prophet hood.
Thus the "sciences of the Sunna" (`ulûm al-Sunna) refer to the biography of the Prophet (peace be upon Him) (al-sîra), the chronicle of his battles, his everyday sayings and acts or "ways", his personal and moral qualities (al-shamâ'il), for example the book al-shamâ’il Muhammideya by Imam Trmithi hadîth sciences such as the circumstances of occurrence (asbâb al-wurûd), knowledge of the abrogating and abrogated hadîth, difficult words (gharîb al-hadîth), narrator criticism (al-jarh wal-ta`dîl), narrator biographies (al-rijâl), etc., as discussed in great detail in the authoritative like books like that of al-Khatîb al-Baghdâdî .
In the terminology of usooul al-fiqh or principles of jurisprudence, Sunna comprises of,
Saying (qawl),
Action (fi’l)
Approval (taqrîr) related from revelation (nuqila `an) the Prophet, or issuing from him other than the Qur'an. Continued pg 3

The Meaning of Sunna
Continued from page 2
The above meanings of Sunna are used in five legal categories for human actions
Fard (obligatory),
Halal (permissible)
Haram (prohibited)
Mubaah (indifferent),
Makrooh (disliked),
- and applies in the usage of jurists from the second Hijri century onwards.
The Imam of Sunna
Imam Ahmad ibn Hambal said:
"The Sunna in our definition consists in the reports transmitted from the Messenger of Allah, and the Sunna is the commentary (Tafsir) of the Qur’an and contains its directions."
One of our pious predecessors
Sufyaan Ibn Sa’eed Ath~Thawree said” Eemaan consists of speech action and intention. It increases and decreases. It increases with acts of obedience and it decreases with acts of disobedience. No speech is accepted except with action, and no speech and action are accepted except with intention, and no speech, action, and intention are accepted unless they agree with the Sunnah.”

Advice of Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal
'Alee ibn Abe Khalid said: I said to Imam Ahmad Ibn Hambal, "This old man -referring to an old man who was present with us and was a neighbor of mine - I have warned him against a person, but he would like to hear your saying about him. Haarith al-Qaseer and you saw me with him many years ago and you said to me, 'Do not sit with him and do not speak to him.' I have not spoken to him from then until now, but this old man sits with him. What do you say about him (i.e. the innovator)?" I saw that Imam Ahmad became red, his veins and his eyes swelled. I have never seen him like that before. Then he shuddered and said, "That is one to whom Allaah has done such and such. No one knows that except one who is fully acquainted with him. Alas! Alas! Alas! He is one not known except to one fully acquainted with him. He was the one whom al-Maghaazilee sat with and Ya'qoob and so and so. He led them to having the views of Jahm.
They were destroyed through him." So, the old man said, "O Abu' Abdullah! He narrated
Hadiths displays dignity and fearfulness. He is such and such." Abu 'Abdullah became angry and said, do not be fooled by his fearfulness, or his gentleness. Do not be fooled by how he drops his head. He is an evil person. This will not be known except by one well-acquainted with him. Do not sit with him, for there is no honor for him. Will you sit with everyone who narrated the Ahadith of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him) and is an innovator?!"
Hadith - Reported by Ibn Abee Ya'laa in Tabaqaatul-Hanaabilah (1/223-234) in the biography of 'Alee ibn Abee Khalid

Abu Dawood as-Sijjistaanee said: I said to Abu' Abdullah, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, 'If I see a man from Ahl us-Sunnah sitting with a man from the people of innovation, should I abandon speaking to him?' He said, "No, you should first inform him that the one whom you saw him with is a person of innovation. Either, he will cease speaking to him, so then continue speaking to him or if not, then regard him to be like him. Ibn Mas'ood said:” A person is like his friend.”
Reported by Ibn Abee Ya'laa in Tabaqaatul-Hanaabilah (1/60) with a Saheeh isnaad and by Ibn Muflih in al-Aadaabush-Shar'iyyah (1/263).
Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyaad said, "Whoever sits with a person of innovation has not been given wisdom."
Reported by al-Laalikaa'ee (no. 263) and Ibn Battah (no. 439). Saheeh isnaad

Clarification of the approved deeds
Narrated Jabar ibn Abdullah (Allah be pleased with Him) who said:
‘When Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him) gave a khutbah His eyes became reddened, His voice raised, and his anger grew to the extent that it were as if he were one exhorting an army saying, “They will attack you morning and evening,” and he would say,” I have been sent along with the last Hour like these two” and he joined his forefinger and middle finger, and would say, “to proceed:
Indeed the best speech is the book of Allah and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace be upon Him), and the worst of affairs are the newly invented matters, and every innovation is misguidance.” reported by Muslim (eng trans. Vol 2 p 410)
This is an explanation of the saying of Allah

“Yes, but whoever submits his face (himself) to Allah and he is a muhsin then his reward is with his Lord, on such shall there be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” Baqarah: 2/112
They say Muhsin means: He follows the messenger (peace be upon Him) in it, since they are two conditions for the acceptability of an action; firstly, that it is purely for the sake of Allah alone and secondly that it is correct, i.e. conforming to the Sunnah. So if it is done purely (for Allah) but is not a correct action then it will not be accepted.
Narrated Umm Abdullah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with Her) who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him) said:

“He who innovates something in this matter of ours that is not of it will have it rejected.”
Also the Hadith narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with Her) that the messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him)

“He who does an act which our matter is not [in agreement] with will have it rejected.”
They were related by al-Bukhari & Muslim
Shaykh Ubaid bin Suleiman Al-Jabiri said: in explanation of these two Ahadith” The action is like dust in the wind and returned back to the person like dust in his face, and in the eyes of Allah it is as if never ever existed.”

Rulings regarding celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon Him)* Question:
Is celebrating the Prophet's birthday Halal or Haraam?
Response:
Establishing the celebration of the Prophet's birthday or (the birthday of) other than him is an innovation. And it has been confirmed on the authority of the Prophet (peace be upon Him) that he said:
((Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours (i.e. Islaam) that which is not from it, will have it rejected)), [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree/2697 and Saheeh Muslim/1718].
And with Allaah lies all success and May Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (Peace be upon Him) and his family and his companions.

Ruling regarding celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon Him))
Question:
What is the ruling regarding celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon Him), and does the Prophet (peace be upon Him) attend (physically or spiritually)?
Response:
Respecting the Prophet (peace be upon Him) and honoring him is by believing in his mission and acting according to What he came with from Allaah. As for celebrating his birthday then it is an innovation, and it has been confirmed on the authority of the Prophet (peace be upon Him) that he said:
((Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours (i.e. Islaam) that which is not from it, will have it rejected)), [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree/2697 and Saheeh Muslim/1718].
And it is not confirmed that the Prophet (peace be upon Him) attends/visits (after his death) anyone from amongst the people, and the principle (of this) is that this does not occur, therefore it is obligatory to remain upon this until (authenticated) evidence suggests otherwise.
And with Allaah lies all success and May Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (peace be upon Him) and his family and his companions.

Ruling regarding celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon HimQuestion:
What is the ruling regarding gathering the people (on the occasion) for the birthday (of the Prophet (peace be upon Him)) whilst they insist that the Prophet (peace be upon Him) attends their sitting? And is this gathering islamically correct, and what is befitting for us to do on the birthday of the Prophet (peace be upon Him), and when was he born, on which day, month, and year? And is the Prophet (peace be upon Him) alive in his grave now or not?

Rulings regarding celebrating the birthday of the Prophet
Response:
Gathering the people on the night of the birthday and the reading of his life story is not legislated, rather it is an innovation. And their insisting that the Prophet (peace be upon Him) attends their sitting is a lie, and the Prophet (peace be upon Him) being
Alive in his grave is the life of barzakhiyyah enjoying the bliss and comfort of paradise, and not like his life in this world, since he died and was washed and covered in the burial shroud and the funeral prayer was performed over him and he was buried like others (are).
And he will be the first who shall rise from his grave on the Day of Resurrection, and Allaah (Subhaanahu WA Ta'aala) has said, addressing him:
{Verily, you will die and verily, they will die. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord}, [Soorah az-Zumar, Aayahs 30 and 31].
And He (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala) said:
{After that, surely, you will die. Then, surely you will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection},
[Soorah al-Muminoon, Aayahs 15 and 16].
And with Allaah lies all success and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (peace be upon Him) and his family and his companions.

Question 5, Fatwa No. 5782
How can one actualize one's love for the Messenger (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam)* Question:
How can one actualize (their) love for the Messenger (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam)?
Response:
Love of the Messenger (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and love of Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala) is actualized by following the Messenger (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam), and everyone who follows the Messenger
(Sal-Allaahu alayhe WA sallam)
is more eligible for the love of Allaah and the love of His Messenger. Allaah
(Subhaanahu WA Ta'aala) says:
{Say: "If you (really) love Allaah then follow me (Muhammad), Allaah will love you}, [Soorah Aal-'Imraan, Aayah 31].
And the sign of the love of the Messenger (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) is that a person inquires about his Sunnah and then follows it and does not add nor take anything away from that. Based upon this, then those who innovate in anything related to the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and state that this is from Their love and honoring of him (the Prophet) then in reality they do not love him and nor honor him.
And that is because true love and honoring of him is to follow his sayings and not to add to his Sharee'ah and nor to take away from it.
And indeed whoever desires to innovate in the Sharee'ah of Allaah that which is not from it, then his love of Allaah and His Messenger is limited without doubt, because
Completeness of manners and honoring is not to extend oneself before Allaah and His Messenger. Allaah said:

Rulings regarding celebrating the birthday of the Prophet

{O you who believe, do not put (yourselves) forward before Allaah and His Messenger, and fear Allaah. Verily! Allaah is All-Hearing; All-Knowing. O you who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak aloud to him in talk as you speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds may be rendered fruitless while you perceive not}, [Soorah al-Hujuraat, Aayahs 1 and 2].
Shaykh Ibn 'UthaymeenFataawa Noorun 'alad-Darb - Volume 2, Page 522, Question 414

Dealing with someone (an innovator) who insists on celebrating the birthday of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam)!*
Question:
We have a man with us at work who approves of the celebration of the birthday (i.e. the Prophet’s (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) birthday), and advocates and insists upon this. Should I abandon him for the Sake of Allaah or not? What should I do? …and may Allaah reward you with good.
Response:
Celebrating the Prophet’s birthday is an innovation, and whoever pursues this (path) is an innovator (mubtadi’) if he insists on doing so and does not accept the (sincere) advice, (rather, choosing to) continue in calling to (celebrating) the birthday and arousing interest in it. (In this case), then, it is obligatory to abandon him since he is an innovator, and it is not permissible to maintain companionship with an innovator.

Supporting the Messenger is by Practicing his Sunnah

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Haadee
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Haadee al Madkhalee speaks about a number of instances from the Seerah where Allaah protected His Messenger (peace be upon Him) and continues…
…So we should know with certainty that Allaah defends/protects/supports His Prophet (peace be upon Him), and we also call the people to support him, but it is imperative for people to firmly understand, especially during these days of great trials and tribulations, that supporting the Prophet (peace be upon Him) is practiced firstly within our own selves.
How?
By loving him (peace be upon Him). That he becomes more beloved to us than our families, our children, our wealth and even our own souls, as has been related in an authentic Hadeeth, that ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with Him) said to the Messenger (peace be upon Him):
“You are more beloved to me than everything except my self.”
So the Messenger (peace be upon Him) said: “No, until I become more beloved to you than even your own self.”
So ‘Umar (Allah be pleased with Him) said: “By Allaah O Messenger of Allaah, you are now more beloved to me than even my own self.”
The Messenger (peace be upon Him) said: “Now O ‘Umar.”
So this is what is Waajib upon us, and loving the Messenger is by following his guidance.
It is surprising these days that a lot of people - and we will not enter into this topic because it’s a whole other subject - but a lot of people call you to boycotting milk, cheese, and so on. If you look at the person who is giving out these papers (that call to boycotting products), you would find that he himself looks like George, or John. His pants/trousers are absurd, his hair is long and is fashioned in a weird style, (phrase unclear), they trim their beards and moustaches and join them or they shave both the moustache and the beard altogether, so if you look around you would find that it is as if you are living somewhere in Europe or America.
This is the person who is speaking and giving out these papers. This indicates that love for the religion is present in the hearts of these believers. But my brothers, have you taken advantage of such an opportunity to give Da’wah to the likes of these brothers who are in this situation.
Meaning, for example, you are calling me to boycott [these products], may Allaah reward you, this indicates that you love the Messenger (peace be upon Him), you are protective over him and you anger for the pleasure of Allaah due to His Messenger being insulted…, but my brother, listen; The Prophet of Allaah (peace be upon Him) was insulted by the Jews, they performed Sihr (magic) on him, they tried to kill him by pushing a boulder over his head when he went to them seeking aid for the Diyah of a man who killed ‘Amr ibn Umayah but were of course unsuccessful. The point is that he was insulted, Sihr was performed on him, they tried to murder him (peace be upon Him), but this being the case, he died while his breastplate was with a Jew as collateral for about 20 Saa’ of Sha’eer, he didn’t boycott them. But now you have fallen into something that is greater than what you are calling me to [keep away from]: The Prophet (peace be upon Him) has ordered you to boycott them in their manners by his saying:
“Do not resemble the Jews or the Christians”
He (peace be upon Him) also said:
“Whoever resembles a people is one of them.”
This Hadith is clear, but these days you see that a lot of the children of the Muslims in their attire and looks, greatly resemble the Jews and Christians; their beards are shaved, their moustaches are shaved, their hair is long and fashioned to resemble them and they dress like them. So why don’t we

Supporting the Messenger is by Practicing his Sunnah
boycott these products, their clothes, in which the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon Him) said to ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr concerning them:
“O ‘Abdullah, this is the attire of the disbelievers so do not wear it!”
The attire of the disbelievers so do not wear it, he did not say do not eat the cheese of the disbelievers.
He said: “O ‘Abdullah, this is the attire of the disbelievers so do not wear it!”
So ‘Abdullah fired up the oven and burnt them in it.
What we are in need of now is to boycott what we were ordered to boycott, which resembles them, because resembling them outwardly leads to resembling them inwardly, and we ask Allaah to alleviate us.
So it is imperative upon us to inform our Muslim brothers and to also take advantage of situations and Circumstances such as these and direct them in the correct legislated direction which is supported by evidence.
I advice by brothers to read the last chapter of Al Jawaab As Saheeh because Shaykh-ul Islaam ibn Taymiyah wrote a beneficial, concise summary of the Seerah in which he suffices himself by citing only the authentic narrations.
My brothers, it is Waajib upon us to be students of knowledge, that we do not get carried away by feelings and emotions, rather we traverse upon well thought out principals and legislated evidences that were related by the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon Him) and his companions and the leading scholars guidance, the -imams of Ahl-us-Sunnah, may Allaah have mercy upon all of them.

Here is another example which strongly condemns any action which is not done according to the way of the messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him) & his Noble Companions (Allah be pleased with them). The incident is mentioned in Sunan of Darimi by the narrator that we were a group who used to come and wait outside the door of Abdullah ibn Mas’ood before the Fajr salaah. When he came out then all of us together used to proceed to the Masjed to for the Fajr salaah. One day Abu Musa Ash’ari came to us and asked, “Has Abu Abdur-Rahman ibn Mas’ood come out yet?” We said, “No.” So he sat down with us. When Ibn Mas’ood came out of his door, we all stood up facing him, and Abu Musa Ash’ari said, “O Abu Abdur-Rahman! I saw just now something very bad Happening in the Masjed, which I very much disliked, and praise be to Allaah my intention is good.” “What have

you seen?” asked Ibn Mas’ood Abu Musa Ash’ari said, “If you live a little longer you will see that thing with your own eyes.” “I have seen various different groups of people grouped together waiting to perform the Fajr salaah. In the mean time these people are making Zikr in the following manner. They have in their hand small stones, and a leader from each group says loudly, “Read a hundred times Timber and the people do so.” Then he calls out loudly, “Read a hundred times Laa ilaaha-Illallaah,” and the people do so, then for a third time he calls out loudly, “Read SubhanAllaah a hundred times”, and the people do so. On hearing this Ibn Mas’ood asked, “So what did you tell them?” Abu Musa Ash’ari replied, “I told them nothing, because I wanted to consult you first.” Ibn Mas’ood replied, “Why did you not tell them to count their sins on those stones; and give them the assurance that if they do that then Allaah

Would not take their good deeds away?
The narrator then says, we proceeded and then entered the Masjed, where Ibn Mas’ood then stood by one of these groups. Then he enquired of them, “What do I see you people doing?” They replied, “We are counting the numbers of the amount of Takbir, Tahlil and Tasbeeh we are reciting. Ibn Mas’ood (R.A.) said, “Count your sins on these stones and I guarantee you that none of your past good deeds will be taken away.” “O Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon Him.), woe to you. How quickly decline and degeneration has come upon you. Many of the Noble Companions of your prophet (peace be upon Him) are still alive amongst you; the blessed clothes of the prophet (peace be upon Him) have not yet become ragged; his cups and utensils have yet not broken; I swear in the name of Allaah in whose hands is my life, either you are following a Deen (religion) more better than the Deen of Muhammad (peace be upon Him)

,or you have opened up a door of great error and sin” The people replied, “O Abu Abdur-Rahman we have intended only to do good.” Ibn Mas’ood replied, “There are many people whose intention is to do good, but they have not reached that goodness, because they deviated from the path of the Noble Companions (Allah be pleased with them). Rasulullah (peace be upon Him.) had informed us; many people would read the Qur’an but the Qur’an would not go down their throats, (they would not practice upon it). “I swear on Allah’s name, I do not know whether many of them are from amongst you or not?” Then Ibn Mas’ood turned away from them (and took his position in the Masjed). Umar bin Muslimah says, “Many people of these groups later joined up with the Kwaarij (The Revolters) and fought against us in the Battle of Nahriwan.
