The eating habits of the Messenger (Peace be upon Him)

It is reported in the Masnad that Allah’s Messenger
(Peace be upon him) said: “The human being has never filled a container worse than his stomach. Hence, it will be sufficient for the son of Adam to satisfy his hunger with a few bites to strengthen his backbone. If he must eat his fill then he should allow for one third food, one third water, and third air.”

Benefits of honey
Sura An-Nahl
(Part-16)
(“And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and what they erect. Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the routes that your Lord made easy for you.

There comes forth from their bellies a drink of varying colors, in which are a cure for people. There is indeed

A sign in that for people who reflect.”)(16:68-69)
In the Bee & Honey are Blessings and a Lesson

What is meant by inspiration here is guidance. The bee is guided to make its home in the mountains, in trees and in the structures erected by man. The bee’s home is a solid structure, with its hexagonal shapes & interlocking forms so there is no looseness in its combs. Then Allah decrees that the bee will have permission to eat from all fruits and to follow the ways that Allah has made easy for it, to mean; wherever it wants to go in the vast spaces of the wilderness, valleys and high mountains. Then each bee comes back to its
Hive without swerving to the right
or left, it comes straight back to its home where its offspring and honey are. It makes wax from its wings, and regurgitates honey from its mouth, and lays egg from its rear, and then the

Next morning it goes out to the fields again.

(“And follow the routs of your Lord made easy for you”)
Qatadah and Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam said:” this means, in an obedient way”, understanding it to be a description of the route of migration. Ibn Zayd said that this is like the Ayah:

(“And we have subdued them for them so that some they may ride and some they may eat”)(36:72)

He said: do you not see that they move the bees’ home from one land to another, and the bees follow them?” the first opinion is clearly the more likely, as it describes the routes that the bees follow,
I.e. Follow these routes as they are easy for you’ this was stated by Mujahid. Ibn Jarir said that both opinions are correct.

(“There comes forth from their bellies, a
drink of varying colors, wherein is a healing for people.”)

Meaning honey that is white, yellow, and red or of other good colors, depending on the different things that the bees eat.

(“In which is a cure for mankind")

Meaning there is a cure in honey for diseases that people suffer from. Some of those who spoke about the Prophetic medicine said that if (Allah) had said there is a cure for

Men then it would be a cure for all disease, but He said

‘in which there is a cure for mankind’,

meaning that it is the right treatment
for every “cold” disease because it is “hot”, and a disease
should be treated with its opposite.

Al-Bukhari & Muslim recorded in their Sahihs from Qatadah from Abu Al-Mutawakkil Ali bin
Dawud An-Naji from Abu Sa’id Al-Kudri that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him) and said,” My brother is suffering from diarrhea”. He said,
((“Give him Honey to drink.”))

The man went and gave him honey, and then he came back

and said, “O Messenger of Allah! (Peace be upon Him) I gave him honey to drink, and he only got worse.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

((“Go and give him honey to drink”))

He went and gave him honey, and then he came back and said,

“O Messenger
of Allah (peace be upon Him) it only made him worse.” The
Prophet (peace be upon Him) said,

((“Allah speaks the truth and your brother’s stomach is lying. Go and give him honey to drink.”))

He went and gave him the honey, and he recovered”
It is reported in Sahih Bukhari, who reported it in his Sahih from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him) said

((“Healing is to be found in three things: the cut made by the (cupper), or drinking (honey), or branding with fire (cauterizing), but I have forbidden my Ummah to use branding with fire”))

Benefits of honey
(Continued from page 2)

(“There is indeed a sign in that for people who reflect”)

Meaning in the fact that Allah inspired this weak little creature to travel through the vast fields and feed from every kind of fruit, then gather it for wax and honey, which are some of the best things, in this is a sign for people who think about the might and power of the bee’s Creator Who caused all of this to happen. From this they learn that he is the Initiator, the All-Powerful, the all wise, the All-knowing, the Most Generous, the most merciful.

Eating habits of Muhammad
(Peace be upon Him)

People complain about what is the right way to eat and how much is too much, when its
Ok to bend the rules that we’ve set for
Ourselves.

With this hadith in mind.
Imam Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyya stated in his book Medicine of the Prophet “Ones body can be accustomed to three levels of diet:
(1) A necessary
(2) A sufficient
(3) A supplementary

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him) told of the required “sufficient” diet,

Saying: “…. few bites to strengthen the backbone and such regime will preserve
the body and will not allow it to debilitate,
or lose its strength.

If one is tempted to
exceed that elementary level of health preservation, then he should “…allow for one third food, and third water, and one third air,” and this is the best of common diets. In fact, when the stomach is saturated with food, it will not be able to take in water, and when food and water exceed their recommenced level, one may suffer from pulmonary difficulties, resulting in stress and exhaustion from the lungs’ being unable to easily deliver oxygenated blood to the left atrium of the heart. One will also feel heaviness in his body, his heart and his Spirit will experience linger and drossiness, so his limbs will fail to obey him in performing
his basic religious duties. Such a state will also stimulate one’s sexual desires. Hence a filled stomach is damaging to one’s body, heart, and spirit.

Imam Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyya continues: This case becomes more harmful when it becomes habit,
though if one occasionally indulges him self in a delicious meal, it is rather healthy and comforting. It is reported in a traditions that Abu Huraira, (Allah be pleased with him)
Drank milk to satiety from a bowl of milk presented to him from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him), until he exclaimed: “I swear by Him who sent you with the message of truth I find no other place for it” Traditions also report that occasionally other companions also ate to satiation, though, as we have mentioned earlier, excess food will cause the body to
languor and experience drowsiness; even though it stimulates it.

However, the body’s health and strength comes from the nourishment it can absorb and not from the quant it takes in, and since the human being is made up of earth water and air, Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him) apportioned his diet into three categories.

Dr. Beaumont stated in 1833:
Satisfaction & Satiety

“In the present state of civilized society, with the provocation of the culinary art, and the incentives of highly seasoned food, brandy and wines the temptations to excess in the indulgence of the table are rather to strong to be rested by poor human nature. It is not less the duty; however in many regard the premonition. Let them at least clear there skirts from the stain of unfaithfulness, whatever may be the result.
There is no subject of dietetic economy about which people
err so much, as that which relates to quantity. The medical profession, too, have been accessory to this error,
in giving directions to dyspeptics to eat until a sense of satiety is felt. Now, this feeling, so essential to be rightly understood, never supervenes until the invalid has eaten too much, if he has an appetite, which seldom fails him.
Those even, who are not otherwise predisposed to the complaint, frequently induce a diseased state of the digestive organs by free indulgence of the appetite.”

Dr. Beaumont Continues
“Of this fact the medical profession are generally, not sufficiently aware. Those who lead
sedentary lives, and whose circumstances will permit of what is called free living, are peculiarly
obnoxious to these complaints But by paying particular attention to their
sensations during the ingestions of their meals; these complaints may be avoided.

There appears to be a sense of perfect intelligence conveyed
from the stomach encephalic center, which, in health, invariably dictates what quantity of ailment (responding to the sense of hunger, and its due satisfaction,) is naturally required for the purpose of life; and which, if noticed, and properly attended to, would prove the most salutary monitor of health, and effectual preventive of, and restorative from, disease.”
Stephen Holt, M.D. states: “There is an important concept in medicine involving the idea of the seed and the soil. The seed, for the sake Of the present discussion, is the agent, or factor that causes
the disease; for example, a virus or toxin. The soil is the body, or organ of the body, that is the site of the disease where the
seed germinates. A farmer knows that a seed will not grow in a bad or ill prepared
ground.

Prepare the stomach by insulting it with toxins, and any seed will grow, if you
throw enough seeds you will get some to
grow…
The concept goes on! I discuss this analogy of seed, and soil because it returns us to natural concepts, and the idea of nature’s balance in the promotion of health.”

Imam Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyya
States in his book Medicine of the Prophet
Allah say’s in Sura Al-A’raf (“and eat and drink, but waste not by extravagance, certainly (He) Allah likes not Al-Musrifun (Those
who waste by extravagance”) (7:31)

In this revelation, Allah directs the believers:
(1) To observe balance in their intake of food and drink
(2) To take in what is beneficial and control their desire for excess
(3) To balance their diet
(4) To eat and drink healthy food and to take in what the body can easily digest in kind, quantity, and preparation.
Both deficiency in nutrients or their saturation can hinder absorption and cause illness, while avoidance of such formula is considered excess.
There are a few Ahadith on the issue of how to be balanced in our eating and drinking habits, for example.

Narrated Abu Huraira (May Allah be pleased with Him)
Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon Him) said, “The food of two
persons is sufficient for three, and the

food of three persons is sufficient for four persons.”(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 304, Vol. 7)
And also
Narrated Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon Him) said, “A believer eats in one intestine (is satisfied with a little food), and a kaafir (disbeliever) or a hypocrite eats in seven intestines (eats too much).”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari, hadith No.306 vol. 7 the book of drinks)

He also mentioned (Peace and blessing be upon Him) to us the manners of eating our meals.

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them both): The Prophet (May Allah be pleased with Him) said, “When you eat, do not wipe your hands till you have liked it, or had it
liked by someone else.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 366, Vol. 7)

Narrated ‘Umar bin Abi Salama (may Allah be pleased with Him): I was a boy under the care of Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon Him) and my hand used to go around the dish while eating. So Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him) said to me, “O boy! Mention the name of Allah and eat with your right had, and eat of the dish what is hearer to you.” Since then I have applied those instructions when eating. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 529, Vol.7)

He (Peace be upon Him) also Said.
Narrated Abu Qatada (Allah be pleased with him)

Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon Him) said, “Whenever anyone
of you drinks water, he should not breath in the drinking utensil.”(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 155, Vol. 1)

The Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessing be Upon Him) also spoke of how to take dates in our diets, When He (Peace be upon Him) said.

“If somebody takes seven ‘Ajwa dates in the morning, neither magic nor poison will hurt him that day.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 664 Vol. 7)

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Ja’far bin Abi Talib (May Allah be pleased with them both): I saw Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon Him) eating fresh dates with snake-cucumber. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 351, vol. 7)

Imam Ibn Qayyim
States in his book Medicine of the Prophet

“Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him) Used to alternate between the different kinds of food available in the area, and he did not fix his diet on any particular kind of food for any prolonged period of time. In fact, adopting a diet of one kind of food is certainly harmful to ones digestive system. Such diet will weaken the body and can affect the stomach’s ability to absorb other kinds of food after eating a bad diet for an extended period.”

“Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him) adhered to the staple food of his surrounding area, including meat, fruits, bread, and
Dates, besides other supplements”

Imam Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyya Also say’s “On the other hand, if he felt aversion toward a particular food, or if he did not desire it. He usually declined to eat it, and he never accepted food that was forced on him.”

In a hadith Narrated by Anas “If the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him) liked food he would eat it if he disliked any food he would not touch it but he never criticized any food.”

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him) always insisted on having diner, even if it were having a handful of dried dates, and he used to say: “Neglecting dinner accelerates the aging process.”
(Reported by Imam al-Trmithi)
There is a Hadith of Abu Na’im that the Messenger of Allah
(peace and blessing be upon Him) “Going to bed on a full stomach
hardens ones heart” (reported by Imam Ibn Maja).

Imam Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyya say’s “That’s why knowledgeable
physicians advise people to have a walk after dinner, even for as Little as one hundred steps, and they suggest that sleeping on a full stomach is harmful. As for muslim physicians, they advise either walking a few steps after dinner, or performing some supererogatory (nafl) prayers before going to bed. This will help the food to settle in the stomach and the digestive process to ripen fully.”

Imam Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyya also say’s “Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon Him) also did not drink anything while eating, or after finishing his meals
for half an hour at least, and
Particularly hot drinks or cold water, otherwise, the
digestive process would be enfeebled, and could cause the
food to spoil in the stomach.”

Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon Him) also liked
to drink cold water sweetened with honey

Imam Ibn Qayyim Al Jaziyya Say’s “Drinking an infusion of honey in the morning is healthier than most drinks that are sweetened with sugar, and is certainly better than artificially sweetened drinks. Sugar-sweetened drinks yield more harm than benefit. A cold drink of honey strengthens the body, preserves its youth, as well as refreshes the spirit, stimulates it with much needed energy and balance. When the heart is healthy the vessels pump the blood easily, and the arties carry the blood that is rich in nutrients to all parts of the body.”

Valentine's Day

While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial -- which probably occurred around 270 A.D -- others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to 'christianize' celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of
wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.
To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification.

The boys then sliced the goat's hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goat hide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman
women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. The Roman 'lottery' system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. Later, during the middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February– Valentine's Day -- should be a day for romance. The oldest
known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

Tawhid notes
(Islamic Monotheism)

Where is Allah?

From the Sunnah

Mu’awiyyah bin al Hakim as Salmi (may Allah be pleased with Him) Said: I had a slave girl who used to hear sheep for me. One day I discovered that A wolf had taken one of the sheep, and I’m a man from the children of Adam (peace be upon Him), I get upset like they get upset, and I slapped her in her face. Then I went to the Prophet (peace be upon Him) who let me know of the seriousness of what I had done. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, should I set her free?” He said, “Bring her to me.” He asked her, “Where is Allah?” She pointed towards the sky (above the heavens) He said, “Who am I?” She said “you are the Messenger of Allah.” He said “free her, for she is a Believer.”
(Narrated Muslim and Abu Dawud)

From the Qur’an

There are seven places in the Qur’an for the Affirmation of Istawa for Allah
Shaykh al Islam Ibn Taimiyyah
Said “Allah’s statement that “The Most Beneficent (Allah) Istawa (rose over the throne) (in a manner that befits His Majesty)” has occurred at seven places in the Qur’an.

He said in
Surah Al-A’raf, verse #54 “Indeed your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then He Istawa (rose over)

Sura Yunus, verse #3
“Surely, your Lord is Allah who created the heavens and the earth in six days and then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne.”

Sura Ar-Ra’d, verse #2 “Allah is He who raised the heavens with ought any pillars that you can see. Then, He Istawa (rose over) the throne”

Sura Ta Ha Verse #5
“The most Beneficent (Allah) Istawa (rose over m) the throne

Sura Furqan Verse #59
“Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six days then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne.”

Sura As-Sajdah Verse # 4

Allah it is He Who has created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six days then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne.”

Sura Al-Hadid Verse #4
“He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six days then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne.”

Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah has faith in those things about which Allah has Himself informed such as,

His occupying the high position over the Throne and is separate from His creatures.

Allah, alone knows the state of Istawa as has been stated by Imam Malik and other than Him. That ‘Istawa is known but its state is unknown and asking about it is An Innovation.’

Fique notes

Aboo Hurayrah (Radiya’Llahu) relates that the Messenger of Allaah (Peace be upon Him) said: “Whosoever Allaah wishes to show excellence to, He gives him the (Fique) understanding of the Religion. Indeed I am the distributor, but the giver is Allaah the Mighty and Majestic.”

Question:
Abdullah ibn-Mas’ud says, “I heard the Messenger of Allah say, ‘Ruqyas, amulets and love charms are acts of Shirk.’ “
Jabar says, “I had an uncle (on my mother’s side) who used to perform Ruqyas. He went to him and said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger, you have banned Ruqyas, and I treat scorpion stings with Ruqyas.’ He replied, whoever can benefit his brother should do so.’ “
How can the Hadith banning Ruqyas and those allowing them be reconciled?

What is the legality of hanging written
Ruqyas on the patient’s chest?
Signed: Abdur-Rahman S.F

Answer:
The banned Ruqyas are those that have elements of Shirk, invocations of other than Allah or incomprehensible inscriptions. The allowed ones are the legally valid ones, and they are a great means of healing. In this regard the Prophet (peace be upon Him) says, “Ruqyas are valid so long as they are void of shirk.” Muslim kitab Assalam hadith No. 2200.

He (peace be upon Him) also says, “Whoever can benefit his brother should do so.” Muslim kitab Assalam hadith no.2199
His (peace be upon Him) saying “Nothing is as good as Ruqyas for treating the evil eye
and the sting/bite” means no Ruqyas are as effective as in these two cases.

The prophet (peace be upon Him)
Himself performed and received Ruqyas.
As for hanging a written Ruqya-it is something called A Tameemah (amulet) a Hirz (protector) or a Jami’ah (that which is inclusive)-
On the sick, or the children it is not allowed. In fact, it is forbidden as an act of shirk, for the prophet (peace be upon Him) said “If one wears an amulet may Allah not grant him his wish; if one hangs a shell, may Allah grant him no peace.” Whoever wears an amulet has committed an act of shirk.”
“Ruqyas, amulets and love charms are acts of shirk.”
However there is no complete agreement among the ulema on the amulets from the Qur’an and valid prayers.

We favor banning them for two reasons.
One reason is the ban on amulets in the hadiths is general, and there are no hadiths that mention exception at all.
The other reason is that the general ban blocks all avenues in the face of shirk amulets, thus giving a preventive shar’I advantage to the ban. Allah is the one who grants success.

Benefits of the phrase
“There is will or power except that of Allah”

Narrated Ibn Abbas that the
Prophet (peace be upon Him) said “when overwhelmed with worries and disparateness, one should often recite ‘There is will or power except that of Allah’ ”
This prayer is also authenticated in the two Sahihs that this prayer is one of the hidden treasures of paradise.

Should these prayers not affect a cure for ones worries, grief and disparateness, it means that ones condition is serious and, requires through purification of his system through complete purgation or detoxification, followed by sincere repentance and devotion to Allah.

Imam Ibn Qayyim says “the above prayer represent fourteen kinds of spiritual remedies”
1. recognizing the oneness of the attribute of Lordship (Rububiyya)
2. recognizing the oneness of the attribute of Oneness (Uluhiyya)
3. Recognition of the faith with the manifest fact of Allah’s supremacy through logical signs, with absolute faith regarding their source.
4. Acknowledging that Allah is free from any injustice and that he will never cause his servant any undue hardships without necessity or reason.
5. Confessing that imperfection and failure are the servant’s own
6. Imploring Allah by his divine names and attributes, which are revelations

His creation must recognize, and among them is the most embracing and comprehensive of attributes; Al-Hayy (The Living) Al-Quyyum (The Controller)
7. Soliciting only His help.
8. Confession of the servant that Allah is the only provider that fulfills one’s needs, and that he is the only one to be sought.
9. confirming ones dependence on Him, relying on Him, and acknowledging that one’s destiny is moving according to the divine plan that he alone has the power to change it; that what is decreed is pursuing its course, and that His ordinance is just.
10. Soliciting the blessing of understanding the divine revelation living by it, and to recognizing it as the light of one’s heart and soul. Through it, one will defeat craving, overcome passion and lust, and dispel darkness. Soliciting the blessings of regularly reciting the divine revelation also comforts one’s heart, and helps focus ones attachments to what is lasting verses what is temporal.
11. Asking for forgiveness for ones sins
12. repenting for ones wrongdoing
13. Taking the course of prayers to receive guidance, and finally
14. Disclaiming any will or power to effect things, and rightly attributing all will and power to Allah the all mighty.
